Provider Engagement: Practical Approaches to Using Electronic Health Records for Research: Challenges and Mitigation Strategies (Technical Assistance Event)

Event Date: March 15, 2011 | 12:00pm – 2:00pm ET

Sponsored by AHRQ's National Resource Center for Health IT

Research studies focusing on the implementation and use of health IT have become more prevalent in recent years. As part of their research projects, grantees must frequently work directly with health IT vendors to modify existing software or to create technical interfaces required for their projects. Vendors often have different priorities than researchers, which may result in delays in implementation and training. Finding the right person at the vendor organization with whom to communicate and work can be daunting for researchers. These challenges and other similar ones may result in project delays, funding challenges and frustration for the grantee and the vendor.

The webinar focused on the challenges of and mitigation strategies for working with vendors for research projects. Topics for discussion included: (1) Challenges of working with vendors when research studies require the use of EHR or health IT; (2) Mitigation strategies for these challenges, including real world examples of successful vendor engagement; and (3) Optimizing the use of EHR and HIE data for research studies.
