A National Web Conference on the Socio-technical Aspects of Health IT

Event Date: March 28, 2007 | 12:30pm – 2:00pm ET

Overall Purpose:

This Web conference will be useful to those designing health care information systems and those working to facilitate information system implementation, adoption, and acceptance into clinical practice.

Little attention had been paid to the integration of technology with workflow, organizational culture, and staff attitudes -- the socio-technical system of health care information technology (healthcare IT). Health care is a complicated system that encompasses the physical and organizational settings of the workplace as well as multiple technologies. For success, the health IT, organizational arrangements, practice, and individual behavior will need to be appropriately integrated. When these socio-technical features are not incorporated into the design and implementation of healthcare IT systems, usage may depart from what was originally envisioned by system designers and managers.

The speakers of this Web conference will discuss their experiences investigating the healthcare IT implementation process and suggest strategies for promoting change to support the successful incorporation of health IT in health care practices.
