Summary:
- HIT Description: Decision support and computerized medication dosing. More info...
- Purpose of Study: Evaluation by two studies of two computer-assisted data management systems for the management of diabetes and insulin dosing.
- Years of study: Not Available
- Study Design: RCT
- Outcomes: Impact on patient safety, Impact on health care effectivness/quality
- Settings: Twenty (Study I) and 19 (Study II) insulin-dependent type I diabetic patients from an outpatient clinic of the University Hospital of Basel, Switzerland participated in the studies.
- Intervention: In Study I, a computer-assisted data management system (Camit ) was compared to the conventional log-book method. In Study II, a computer-assisted data management system (ÒCamitÓ) was compared to another computer-assisted data management system (ÒCadmoÓ).
- Evaluation Method: Measures of HbA1c, hypoglycemic events, and glucose levels.
- HIT System: o The computer-assisted data management systems used were ÒCamit S1Ó and ÒCadmoÓ(an updated version of ÒCamit S1Ó), both commercially available computer programs.
- Quality of Care and Patient Safety Outcome: HbA1c values decreased significantly in both studies (p 0.05). A clear decline in hypoglycemic events as well as a significant reduction of the percentage of glucose values below 4.0 mmol/l (p 0.005) and a marked increase (p 0.05) in the percentage of glucose levels in the target range (4.0-10.0 mmol/l) were observed.
