Rural Populations

Planned, developed, and implemented a methodology for behavioral health care providers to standardize core shared data elements; designed an integrated management information system for the sharing of health care data and information among rural and urban health care providers; connected rural providers to urban providers; and developed messaging capabilities between primary care and behavioral health care providers.

This project developed and deployed iHealth, an Internet-based disease management tool that collects data and generates reports to enhance management of Hepatitis C virus.

Designed a system-wide patient-centered planning process and an EHR implementation plan that securely exchanged patient information within and across diverse health care settings for the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, in addition to 21 affiliated physician health organization clinics.

For this project, software engineering practices were developed to guide others in the development of trustworthy electronic health record applications; developed techniques to evaluate the trustworthiness of these applications; and used these techniques to evaluate six products.

Designed a county-wide health information system that allowed health information sharing and permitted real-time order placement by hospitals, health departments, private physicians' offices, clinics, and long-term care facilities.

This project looked at the ability of EHRs to facilitate patient outcomes tracking, improve provider communication, reduce medical errors, and improve quality of care.

Developed, implemented, and evaluated a cooperative effort for using health IT to facilitate a continuum of appropriate medical and developmental care, from the time infants are admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), through the transition process to community-based health care services for infants most at-risk for long-term neurodevelopmental problems.

This project established an integrated information and communication technology system to help older adults age in place and live independently for as long as possible, and found that the system improved user quality of life.

Implemented and evaluated the results of the Consolidated Imaging—Picture Archiving and Communication System (a shared, standards-based, interoperable health information technology) that makes radiology images available for review within minutes of when they are acquired.

Implemented a systematic care program to improve cancer management in rural communities by building upon an innovative approach to total clinical decision support to provide access to oncology, hematology, and other specialists through a dedicated telehealth network.
